E. Coli Alert For Western New York.

November 8, 2012

Western New Yorkers are being warned about the potential for E. coli poisoning. Buffalo and Rochester area Wegmans stores have issued warnings that some organic spinach or spring mix blend of bagged salad may be contaminated. If you purchased these products in the past few weeks, do not eat it.

There have been 19 reported cases of E. coli in Monroe, Erie, Niagara, Steuben and Wayne counties. Five Western New Yorkers have been hospitalized. Wegmans had voluntarily recalled salad sold between October 14th and November 1st which may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

While additional testing still needs to be performed to absolutely determine that this salad is the cause of the reported cases of E. coli, it appears to be a common factor among the victims. Symptoms of E. coli infection include stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. If you have eaten the potentially contaminated salad and are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately.
